Happy Birthday...

Today is my brother David's birthday. I thank our Heavenly Father for David. For two decades I have depended upon David for help in many difficult parts of work and life, and he has been faithful in his brotherhood. Happy birthday, dear brother.

A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.  - Proverbs 17:17

A psalm for Easter...

Let's celebrate Easter
with the rite
of laughter.
Christ died and rose
and lives.
Laugh like a woman
who holds her first baby.
Our enemy death
will soon be destroyed.
Laugh like a man
who finds he doesn't have cancer
or does but now there's a cure.
Christ opened wide the door of heaven.
Laugh like children
at Disneyland's gates.
This world is owned by God
and He'll return to rule.
Laugh like a man
who walks away uninjured
from a wreck
in which his car was totaled.
Laugh
as if all the people in the whole world
were invited to a picnic
and then invite them.

Watergate and the Resurrection of Jesus...

(TB: Chuck Colson wrote this helpful piece on the Resurrection of Jesus.)

After I became a Christian, my lawyer’s mind demanded evidence regarding the Bible. Was it legend, or could it really be taken as God’s revelation?

I read some excellent books. But ultimately it was my experience in Watergate, strange as that will sound, that convinced me the Bible is the authoritative, inerrant revelation of God. Let me explain...

Paedocommunion (4): a house divided...

...the division among those who say they believe in "paedocommunion" is far deeper than most imagine. Those who require discernment on the part of the child before he can partake in the Supper have already rejected the reasoning of a large part of the paedocommunionist camp.

(This is the fourth in a series opposing paedocommunion, a practice started by some Reformed parents a few years ago in which parents require their infants and toddlers to participate in the Lord's Supper. Here are the firstsecond, and third in this series. For more on this subject, see the "Paedocommunion" tag.)

We showed in our previous post that those who demand they be permitted to feed their infants and toddlers at the Lord's Table (denying their children need to obey Scripture's command to discern the body) have lost any reasonable, biblical grounds for delaying the participation of their baptized children in the Lord's Supper even a single day. By their own logic, immediately following their newborn's sacramental initiation into the Church of Jesus Christ through baptism, they must commune their child.

We now turn to the paedocommunionists who reject this no-discernment position and require some form of discerning the body on the part of their child...

Governor Pence Statement on HEA 1337

Indianapolis – Governor Mike Pence today issued the following statement after signing House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1337:

“Throughout my public career, I have stood for the sanctity of life. HEA 1337 is a comprehensive pro-life measure that affirms the value of all human life, which is why I signed it into law today.

“I believe that a society can be judged by how it deals with its most vulnerable—the aged, the infirm, the disabled and the unborn. HEA 1337 will ensure the dignified final treatment of the unborn and prohibits abortions that are based only on the unborn child's sex, race, color, national origin, ancestry, or disability, including Down syndrome.

“Some of my most precious moments as Governor have been with families of children with disabilities, especially those raising children with Down syndrome. These Hoosiers never fail to inspire me with their compassion and these special children never fail to move me with their love and joy.

“By enacting this legislation, we take an important step in protecting the unborn, while still providing an exception for the life of the mother. I sign this legislation with a prayer that God would continue to bless these precious children, mothers and families.”

—Governor Mike Pence

We thank Governor Pence, our Indiana legislators, and God for this act of justice and equality for all.

Children are a blessing from the Lord: Emmeline Kate Bayly...

I'm not keeping up with announcing the joy of new grandchildren given us by God. Yesterday, Emmeline Kate Bayly was born to Reze Bayly, wife of Taylor Bayly.

Mother and baby are doing well. We thank God for Emmeline's safe delivery and His kindness to us in our celebration of Mom Taylor's 99th birthday this weekend.

Mom Taylor had ten children, all of whom gathered for the celebration of her birthday with almost all the spouses, also. Those ten children had twenty-eight children of their own, and those grandchildren have had, so far, about 75 of their own children. So Emmeline is something like Mom Taylor's 75th great-grandchild.

What blessings of fruitfulness God has given Mom! What joy she and all these hordes and scads of children are to us!

Test the spirits: Tully and friends...

(NOTE: I was not aware of the present and very sad additional scandals in Tully's life just announced the day I posted this warning. Had I known, I would have written a different post or not written at all. Please join me in praying for Tully and his family. And may God guard each of us from these sins of the flesh which do terrible harm to all those most precious in our lives; but worse, that cause scandal to the Name of our Lord and His Bride. TB)

Men, we need to warn our sheep and loved ones against these false shepherds. Tully is very appealing to Reformed souls who have no deep root and are in bondage to sin, but the cheap grace he and his friends sell is the road that leads to death. If you love your family and fellow church members, don't be silent.

Having eaten pizza with Cheap Trick at a DeKalb bar back in the day, I liked the author's link to "I Want You To Want Me" as these men's true heart desire.

Remember this warning given both by our Lord and his Apostle John:

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. (1 John 4:1)

Paedocommunion (3): when proper discernment requires no discernment...

(This is the third in a series opposing paedocommunion, a practice started by some Reformed parents a few years ago in which parents require their infants and toddlers to participate in the Lord's Supper. Here are the first and second in this series.)

melina take communion.jpgAs stated in the previous post in this series, Jeff Meyers's novel exegesis of 1 Corinthians 11 subscribed to by paedocommunionists leaves them convinced that, when the rest of the Covenant community is partaking of the Lord's Supper, regardless of age, for a member of the Covenant community to abstain is sin. Those who refuse to commune with the rest of the covenant community have failed to discern the body. In fact, Meyers demands that orthodox Presbyterians examine themselves by this rule coming out of his exegesis. As he sees it, the historic Presbyterian and Reformed church's requirement that all who partake of the Lord’s Supper must be able to discern the body is proof the historic Presbyterian and Reformed church has failed to discern the body, and thus they are guilty of breaking apart the Church's unity—the sin of schism.

Yet, when we examine the range of practices among paedocommunionists, particularly with regard to “discerning the body" around the Lord's Table, it is clear this is no united group holding to the same doctrine and practice. Rather, paedocommunionists are split into two camps: first, there are those who require no discernment at all from the Covenant child; and second, there are those who demand the Covenant child has enough discernment to recognize he is part of the body. Even within these two camps, though, there is inconsistency of belief and practice.

In this post, we'll focus on the first of the two groups—those who require no discernment at all from the Covenant child...

President Obama: sin, cowardice, and corruption...

From Jeff Goldberg's 20,000 word piece on President Obama titled "The Obama Doctrine" just published in the Atlantic:

Those who speak with Obama about jihadist thought say that he possesses a no-illusions understanding of the forces that drive apocalyptic violence among radical Muslims, but he has been careful about articulating that publicly, out of concern that he will exacerbate anti-Muslim xenophobia. He has a tragic realist’s understanding of sin, cowardice, and corruption, and a Hobbesian appreciation of how fear shapes human behavior. And yet he consistently, and with apparent sincerity, professes optimism that the world is bending toward justice. He is, in a way, a Hobbesian optimist.

Sympathy for the Trumpster-divers...

The soulless creatures who have been the enforcers of the closing of the American mind for decades, now, all contracted the plague during their mandatory four-year service to the Academy we euphemistically refer to as "getting the college degree." If someone escapes the Academy with their thinking still free and their speaking truthful, the media can be trusted to finish the Academy's work.

When NPR needs someone to comment on the darkness of darkness above the Arctic Circle, it has to be a PhD. But when NPR needs someone to comment on the higher suicide rate among single men who are childless, it has to be a PhD then, too.

Even when NPR needs someone to explain why the Stupid Class is coming out in droves for Donald Trump, they'll get a PhD to do the explaining.

No kidding: even if NPR needs someone to explain...

Pat Conroy, 1945 - 2016...

I thought I wrote The Great Santini because I hated my father, and I realized later that I wrote it because I needed to love him. I needed a father to love.  - Pat Conroy

Yesterday, 70-year-old South Carolina novelist, Pat Conroy, died. Conroy's most famous work was his autobiographical novel, The Great Santini, in which he sustains the spewing of venom against his monstrous father from first page to last. My response to the portrayal of the father by his son was visceral. It was like watching a Praying Mantis mate. There was absolutely no love lost and I don't think I finished the book.

If you haven't read The Great Santini, do yourself a favor. Don't. Just imagine hundreds of pages of abuse of his wife and children by the most wicked Marine Corps officer you could imagine as recorded by a son who has sworn vengeance against his father from the day of his birth. Son Conroy carries his vengeance out with a vitriol you can't imagine even Truman Capote pulling off. You have the picture...

As the years passed, Son Conroy made something of a peace with his father, God be praised. He talks about it here in a Fresh Air interview with Terry Gross...

Reformed celebrities and the IUD...

I'm curious to know whether any of the websites owned by groups of Reformed celebrities has warned the souls who look to them as teachers of godliness to repent of the sin of bloodshed? In Psalm 106, God condemns His people for shedding the blood of their sons and daughters:

They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons, And shed innocent blood, The blood of their sons and their daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; And the land was polluted with the blood. Thus they became unclean in their practices, And played the harlot in their deeds. Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against His people And He abhorred His inheritance. Then He gave them into the hand of the nations, And those who hated them ruled over them. (Psalms 106:37-41)

When he reads Scripture, the godly man assumes the sins of God's people recorded in the Old Testament are present in the Church today; he assumes their sins are his sins. So how do we shed the blood of our sons and daughters?

The New England Journal of Medicine just ran a piece built on reports from Planned Parenthood's research affiliate, the Guttmacher Institute, concerning the decrease in unwanted pregnancies these past few years which they attribute to a large increase in the use of IUDs.

For those who don't know about this pagan practice, one of the ways the IUD works is to make the uterus a hostile environment for the little baby...
