Paige Patterson is the real deal...

I've deleted this post and apologize for writing it. But I do want to say that Paige Patterson is, as the title indicates, my hero. GIVEN THE TITLE, TO CLARIFY: I'd mentioned Paige and Dorothy to compare them (favorably) to others, so the original post had nothing hinting at negative toward Paige and Dorothy.

Gagnon's critique of Moore's "Here We Stand"...

Full disclosure, Robert Gagnon was a friend of my cousin, John DeWalt, and I have an autographed copy of his masterpiece, The Bible and Homosexual Practice. I've recommended it before. If you want the best work on Scripture's teaching on homosexuality, there's nothing close.

That said, I also have spoken at a conference with Russ Moore and David and I have expressed our appreciation for his efforts to defend the Biblical doctrine of sexuality. This time, though, Russ has come up for a well-deserved drubbing by Gagnon and it's ironic given the fact that Dr. Moore is a member of the conservative Southern Baptist Convention and runs their Ethics and Religious Life Commission in Washington D.C. while Dr. Gagnon is a member of the mainline Presbyterian Church (USA) and a professor at the PC(USA)'s Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

Dr. Moore put together a statement opposing the Supreme Court's Obergefell v. Hodges decision. The statement is called Here We Stand and people like Al Mohler, Danny Akin, Paige Patterson, Paul Tripp, Denny Burke, Karen Swallow Prior, James MacDonald, Alistair Begg, Owen Strachan, Bryan Chapell, and Rosaria Butterfield signed on. You too can sign on if you get them your name and position by this Friday.

Trouble is, the statement is less than wise.

Crumble Abroad...

Yes, yes; I know she's my daughter and every father thinks his daughter's the best! Yes, yes; I know I'm an aspirant doting grandfather.

But really, you simply MUST read the blog posts chronicling Ben and Michal's move to the Phillipines—Cebu City, to be exact—and their life there with their four children, three sons and one daughter. Here are a couple paragraphs from their latest...

Why are quiet Christians so alarmed right now...

One venerable reader has criticized the alarm of quiet Christians in the face of this past week's rulings by the Supreme Court—particularly Obergefell v. Hodges. As he sees it, this particular decision is not nearly as destructive as the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade which legalized, not simply sodomitic marriage, but the murder of unborn children. He points out Roe v. Wade was a much more evil ruling in its intent and fruit, resulting in more than fifty million slaughtered babies over the past thirty-two years in these United States alone.

Of course he's right about the wickedness of Roe v. Wade and the riot of bloodshed it has unleashed across our nation and copied around the world. Billions of men made in the image of God have been slaughtered in the past few decades, and in much of the world the local justification has born the mark of the obscene ideology of North American feminism. It's true Evangelicals have never had much of a heart to oppose this slaughter, although for what it's worth, we do label ourselves "pro-life."

As I said to Mary Lee several days ago, Evangelicals quoting Francis Schaeffer on civil disobedience this past week should keep in mind that...

Sermon notes: Galatians Series, Number 16...

Now at this point many are tempted to think that the Apostle Paul is here talking about a sort of Eastern mysticism whereby we decrease and God increases; that as we lay down our lives, our wills, our personalities, our actions, God is pleased to fill us with Himself and to live through us His life, His will, His personality, and His actions. And to some degree this is true. As believers, we do die to ourselves and are made alive to Jesus Christ.

But that aliveness is not one that leads us away from our will, personality, and actions; instead it changes our will, personality, and actions so that, instead of sin being our master, God is the One who controls us. Yet His control is not away from life into the mist and ozone of self-negation, but towards life, true life, in which everything is clear; we have the Spirit of God dwelling in us, and He makes all things new; we are zealous for good works knowing that it is those good works to which we have been saved.

NOTE: This is number 16 in a series on Galatians. If this is your first time reading sermon notes here, please take time to read a helpful explanation at the bottom of this post...

Sermon Text: Galatians 2:20, 21

This Lord’s Day, we turn to our sixteenth in a series of sermons on the New Testament book of Galatians...

Please take time to thank Chris Atkins...

Yesterday was the last day of public service for Chris Atkins (Chris is at the mic) who served in the administrations of both Governors Mitch Daniels and Mike Pence, ending his service yesterday as Director of Indiana's Office of Management and Budget. Chris and his wife, Shallen, were at Clearnote during their years in Bloomington. Chris got his law degree at IU, and following work for a couple policy groups in D.C., Gov. Daniels brought him back to Indiana where Chris has faithfully served as one of our civil magistrates, presiding under two governors over conservative fiscal policies that have made our Hoosier state the envy of other states in our Union in terms of financial health, particularly long-run solvency.

As you know, yesterday was a brutal day for confessing Christians called to be civil magistrates and I thought it would be good for some of us to express our personal gratitude to Chris for his faithful service...

You will remember the last twenty-four hours the rest of your life. CNN ran the headline at the top of the Google News page, "The week that changed the nation," and the article began...

Obergefell v. Hodges: three of the five...

By the way, although many of the evils of Obergefell v. Hodges are obvious, some are less so and one is almost entirely hidden...

Obergefell v. Hodges: to Hell with these United States of America...

The Supreme Court of these United States just issued their decision, Obergefell v. Hodges, repudiating the rule of law under the U.S. Constitution, but also the laws condemning sodomy across all human history. Our august justices simply adore men lying with men and women with women—what do nature and nature's God have to do with it? Wee Five all decked out in our black robes peering down from our great eminence and seeing the rebellious hearts of slugs and moles living in places like Mississippi, South Carolina, Oklahoma, and Indiana...

Church celebrities who are above criticism (II): Bill Gothard...

He deprives the trusted ones of speech And takes away the discernment of the elders. (Job 12:20)

In a post put up a couple weeks ago, I recounted how, in the late sixties, Dad Bayly publicly criticised Bob Jones University. He did so in his monthly column in ETERNITY Magazine. It was also in his ETERNITY column that Dad issued public criticisms of Bill Gothard.

Back in 1975.

Forty years ago.

Now, Bill Gothard is eighty years old and others are seeing their way clear to say a few things themselves...

King vs. Burwell: Scalia's dissent crushes the majority...

We should start calling this law SCOTUScare.  - Justice Scalia

Justice Scalia was joined by Justices Thomas and Alito in his dissent from the Supreme Court's decision King v. Burwell (dissent included) which once again upheld the nationalization of one-fifth of the U.S. economy popularly referred to as "Obamacare."

From the dissent...
