The good father: you are responsible for your wife and child...

What is man?

Many have tried to state the essence of manhood. They have pointed to things like provision, protection, and authority, but none of these things exist in a vacuum. Each of them is a derivative of something larger, something more elemental.

God made man for responsibility. Listen to what He said to...

the first man, Adam:

Then the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”

Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” (Genesis 2:15-18)

It was Adam God commanded not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. After giving His command, He created Eve.

Later, when Adam and Eve disobeyed His command, God called Adam to account:

And [God] said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”

The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.” (Genesis 3:11, 12)

Confirming Adam's responsibility, the New Testament declares it was through one man, Adam, that sin and death entered the world:

For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.  (Romans 5:19)

Adam was responsible for Eve. Adam was responsible for us. When Adam sinned, he betrayed his responsibility and sin and death came to us all.

God made man for responsibility.

We see this same male responsibility in what Scripture says concerning Christ and His bride:

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; (Ephesians 5:25-28)

Christ is responsible for the Church. He gave Himself up for her. He sanctifies her. He cleanses her. He presents her to Himself holy and blameless because of His work on her behalf.

You are now a husband and father. Like Adam, God has made you responsible for your wife and child. For good or ill, you will carry out your responsibilities and one day soon give an account to God for how you have fulfilled them. This is a heavy weight you will carry whether you like it or not, whether you feel you are prepared for it or not, whether you believe you are gifted for it or not, whether your wife and child acknowledge your responsibility or not.

Yes, your wife and child also have weighty responsibilities before God for which they too will answer, but your responsibility comes first and will not end until death.

Every husband and every father knows the weight of this responsibility, just as you now know it.

What will you do with it? Will you run? Or by faith, will you stand?

Plead with God for His help as you take up your responsibility for this new life He has given you and your wife.

What is man?

Man is responsible.
