Bob Webber has fallen asleep in the Lord and John Stott has retired.

Obama: One more UCC syncretist...

-by Tim Bayly

Here's an article from the New York Times on Senator Barack Obama's church and pastor. The piece is fascinating, both for the glimpses it gives into the origin of Sen. Obama's theological commitments, and the way the Times treats matters of religious faith. Over the years it's always seemed the Times' Great White Fathers can't speak of the tiniest aspect of religious faith without displaying the howlingly ludicrous combination of supercilious ignorance.

Sen. Obama attends the largest church of the UCC--what my friend, Donald Bloesch (also a member of the UCC), tells me stands for  "Unitarians Considering Christ." More official sources, though, say it's the United Church of Christ.

Like clockwork, the piece has Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton's colleague, Jim Wallis, pawntifuscating as a self-styled "progressive evangelical." While we're on the subject, I assume everyone knows Jim Wallis' alma mater is Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and that he continues to lecture at their invitation? Also, that Random House just bought out Multnomah Publishers?  But I digress. Back to the Times piece for my favorite quote:

Generally, Mr. Obama emphasizes the communal aspects of religion over the supernatural ones.

(Thanks, David.)

Under the Shadow of the Almighty...

Abigail Several weeks ago I told our good readers about Abigail Morgan, a precious one-year-old of Christ the Word. Some of you have remembered Abigail in prayer as she underwent chemotherapy preparatory to receiving a bone marrow transplant for leukemia.

Abigail had the transplant a week ago and is now in the thick of issues surrounding that transplant--issues which will likely tell the story of the transplant's success. Today Abigail was moved into the intensive care unit of the University of Michigan's Mott Children's Hospital.

Her mother, Julie, writes:

Abbie continues to have a rough time. She might have VOD (venous-occlusive-disease) which can be caused by the chemo she received for her transplant. What that means is that her liver is backing up with fluid and not working properly. She also might have sepsis (an infection in her blood that causes massive inflammation). She also continues to need a lot of transfusions because her platelets count remains low. Needless to say, she is pretty sick. The doctors have decided to send her down to the ICU for closer monitoring and more aggressive medical management of her fluid status. They are going to try more aggressive drugs to get the fluid off and if that doesn't work then they will try dialysis (which will mean yet another IV access site). I will write more later but remember none of this is a surprise to God and she continues to rest in the Shadow of the Almighty's wing.

We rest our hope in those sheltering wings. Join Christ the Word in remembering Abbie, Darren and Julie, and big sister Eliana in prayer over the next few days in particular. A blog with updates on Abigail can be found here

Other PCA standards in peril...

A friend called my attention to Redeemer Presbyterian Church's (NYC) new "Diaconate Director," Jenny Chang... Jenny follows Andrea Mungo who served as Redeemer's Diaconate Director nearly a decade.

Redeemer defines its diaconate thus:

The Diaconate, a group of men and women nominated and elected into the office by the Redeemer members, exists to express in practical ways Christ's command to all believers to love our neighbor as ourselves. We offer help to those in crisis or challenging situations by assessing their needs and working together to find solutions.

An invitation to join Church of the Good Shepherd...

Mensretreatbb Daily I praise God for the church Mary Lee and I are privileged, with our children, to have for our spiritual home. Last weekend, we had a men's retreat and our youngest, Taylor, came along. There he is, sitting with Alex Bristol, David Canfield, Lawrence Howell, and Steve Traeger's shoulder. Later in the day, we played basketball, and ultimate frisbee. Click through to the next page and you'll see they're both serious business to us.

Sunday afternoons following Home Fellowship Groups, forty of us or so gather at Olcott Park and play soccer until it's too dark to see. It's wonderful--boys and girls, old and young, all having fun together. And finally, a picture of our Easter Sunrise service in our new church building. (Thanks, Colin Hobbs, for serving as our church photographer. Excellent job!)

If you don't have a church home, come and join us. You'd move for a job. Why not for a church? We're always making a place for new members of the family, young and old, single and married, patriarchal and egalitarian, Reformed and Arminian, credo and paedo, highbrow and lowbrow--all are welcome, as long as you recognize that your officers will be boringly biblical on all doctrinal matters, having subscribed to the Westminster Standards.

Of course, David might argue you should move to Toledo, instead. Keep in mind, though, that they're just starting their capital campaign, whereas ours is finis.

Update to "Please pray"...

Here's an update from our friend on the "Please pray" post below:

Thoughts on the ad interim report on Federal Vision theology...

Now that the PCA's Ad Interim Study Committee on Federal Vision, New Perspective, and Auburn Avenue Theologies has issued its report, debate will be lively. But framing the debate is vital. And to that end Tim and I have several comments we'd like to make.

1. It appears our report a year ago that some within the PCA desire to rid the PCA of 85 Federal Vision (FV) churches was accurate.

Study Committee on New Perspective/Federal Vision issues report...

…it is evident that the version of covenant and election taught by the NPP and FV is incompatible with the views of the Westminster Standards. In fact, these two approaches to covenant and election are not complementary ways of looking at the biblical data, but irreconcilably contradictory alternative accounts of the biblical data. (from the Report of Ad Interim Study Committee on Federal Vision, New Perspective, and Auburn Avenue Theologies)

The PCA general assembly appointed a committee to study the New Perspective on Paul and the Federal Vision/Auburn Avenue theology. The report has just been issued and can be found here. Not to prejudge the matter, but the above quote is indicative of the fact that there are real teeth in the report's declarations and recommendations--teeth that, if the coming assembly adopts the report, will require a number of men to make some tough choices about their ecclesiastical commitments...

As with a branding iron...

But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron... (1 Timothy 4:1, 2)

For years, I've been an electronic subscriber to Joe Sobran's essays and newsletter. This from the essay recceived today:

Abortion and nuclear weapons have lost much of their power to horrify. Like Macbeth, we "have supped full with horrors," except that Macbeth still realizes what he has done and knows what should horrify him.

The modern world's case is worse. When you habitually violate your principles, you don't just harden your conscience; you risk losing it altogether. You even wind up forgetting what your principles used to be.

May the Holy Spirit keep our consciences tender--as tender as the skin of a newborn baby.

Some comparisons are both odious and necessary....

(Actually posted by Tim.)

Check out this article by Cal Thomas comparing the media's treatment of the Virginia Tech victims with its treatment of the victims of partial birth abortion.

Imagine there's no father, it's easy if you try...

The Independent in London reports that lab gargoyles are seeking ethical permission to produce faux sperm from lesbians' bone marrow to the end that lesbians can have daughters who are completely uncorrupted by the male of the species.

We might add, every male except that one man, Adam.

(Thanks, Michael.)

Please pray...

Just received this E-mail from a Christian brother in another city who asks for prayer. Would you all please join me in praying for this young man, his girlfriend, and their baby?

While eating breakfast this morning at a local cafe I overheard two young men discussing the recent pregnancy of one's girlfriend. The "father" was advising his girlfriend to take RU486 and eliminate the "problem" before "it became a baby." His chivalry was amazing as he had offered to "split" the cost of the pill with her, which he believed to be about $35.00. Needless to say I no longer enjoyed my breakfast. I confronted the "father" and explained to him that there was already a baby involved and that God would only be pleased if the baby was not aborted. I gave him my phone number and told him that (my wife) and I would take care of the girlfriend, the birth and the baby if he wanted to avoid killing the baby. Please pray today for God's conviction on his and his girlfriend's lives and that this baby will be saved. Although timid and uneducated in reproduction, the other young man at the table agreed with me and appeared to be encouraging the "father" to take the advice.
