Gays: can you see the real me, can you, can you...

Error message

When they hold a "gay pride" parade, don't ever forget what God Himself says about "gays." He doesn't tell them they're happy or should be. He doesn't assure them they have found their destiny. He doesn't tell them to have the strength to be who they really are...

No.

Rather, He says their gayness is bondage. He says their self-esteem is a curse. He says their emotional, spiritual, and sexual narcissism is the prison He has made for them. He declares that their imprisonment in themselves and their filthy identity is His decree.

He reveals in His Word that gays' depraved sexuality is one form of wickedness He is revealing His wrath against. He says gays are men who suppress the truth. He says gays are men He has given over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity. He says gays are without excuse. He says He "gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them." He says He "gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural."

He says:

...in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.  - Romans 1:27-32

Why did God say these things about gays? Was He trying to be hurtful? Had He no sensitivity? Did He really think it was necessary to rain on their parade?

Governor Pence welcomed them. Why can't God?

Talking with and about gays, governors like Mike Pence and pastors like Scott Sauls don't sound anything like God, do they? Is anyone anywhere preaching an expository sermon opening up God's judgments against gays He chose to record in Romans 1? Is there any pastor who believes the faithful exposition of God's wrath against gays is the path to gays' repentance so that they may join the rest of us sinners in the church and be blessed by the designation "of such were some of you?"

Yes, of course God doesn't let other sinners off the hook. We all remember the second chapter of Romans starts with this warning we have often thanked God for and taken to heart:

Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things. But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God?  - Romans 2:1-3

But should our taking to heart our own warning be an excuse for our refusal to open up and proclaim God's warnings to gays? Is the second half of Romans 1 still helpful today, or was it just for the Ancient World where things had gotten a bit out of hand? Where sodomy was always between unequals? Where the little boys who serviced older men had arrows branded on the soles of their feet so older men could find them easily?

We think that today, the nature of sodomy has changed. We have been fooled into believing it's no longer like the ancient world where sodomy was always and only a sexual relationship between unequals, older men and pretty younger men. And boys.

We believe it's only between peers, now. And yet, throughout human history sodomites have preyed on young men and boys. But of course, the Ancient Greeks would never have understood our use of the word 'prey." To them, the sexual perversion of young men and boys was "the principal cultural model for free relationships between citizens."

So why are we blind to the nature of sodomy today? Why do we allow ourselves to be deceived, thinking that sodomy has evolved and sodomites aren't interested in boys any longer? On what basis do we speak as if sodomy is kinder and gentler today—that now, sodomy is all about mutuality?

Mutuality like Roman Catholic priests with their altar boys? Mutuality like Coach Sandusky with his boys in the shower? Like Boy Scout leaders with their Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts?

Like wrestling coach Dennis Hastert with the manager of his wrestling team who died a few years later of AIDS?

Listen, brothers: across history, sodomy has always been a relationship of unequals. It's in the nature of the perversion. Read ancient history and then open your eyes. Read Romans 1 and then open your eyes.

If you love those tempted by or in bondage to same-sex intimacy, you will know their temptation—it's origin, nature, and destiny—inside out, and Romans 1 is the best place to start.

This meditation inspired by our Evangelical Governor Mike Pence issuing the following press release today as his welcome to Indy's gay pride festival:

Greetings,

On behalf of the people of Indiana, welcome to Indianapolis. I am confident that those of you who traveled from out of state will come to know our famous Hoosier Hospitality.

Our state’s capital city is well known as a destination for conventions, festivals, business meetings and other events. In fact, a recent USA TODAY Reader’s Choice digital poll ranked Indianapolis as the Best Convention City in the country.

Like so many other organizations who continue to use Indianapolis as their destination of choice, I am confident you will come to know a vibrant city.

During your stay, please explore the many entertainment options Indianapolis has to offer such as our museums, restaurants, theaters, historic landmarks, White River State Park, and the Indianapolis Zoo, just to name a few.

So, once again, welcome to Indiana. We hope you enjoy your stay.

Sincerely,

Mike Pence

Gov. Pence's letter welcoming the Circle City IN Pride festival was a big step forward, according to GAYSTARNEWS: "'...we appreciate that Governor Pence issued us this letter,' said Indy Pride President Chris Morehead."

Circle City IN Pride will culminate in the Cadillac Barbie IN Pride Parade to be held downtown on June 13th. Last year about 100,000 people came to the festival to glory in their shame.
