Proud as punch of Governors Walker and Daniels...

(Tim) If anyone cares about my opinion on a political matter, I'm proud as punch of the governors of our former home state, Wisconsin, and our current state, Indiana, taking on our public servants' unions. I've been a dues-paying member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen and that was all I needed to know that unions have become corrupt. One day word came down from the men with the most seniority who worked the day shift that those of us working the swing shift--the new-timers--better slow down and cut our freight car repair production because we were making them look bad. -Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, Proviso Yards, car knocker and air brakeman, 1975

So bravo to Governor Daniels for this straight talk:

There may have been a time, a century ago, where public employees were mistreated and vulnerable and underpaid. If that was ever a problem, we have over-fixed it. Public employees in America--most decidedly federal employees, but everywhere--are better paid than the taxpayers that pay their salaries. -Gov. Mitch Daniels

100% agreed. Also worthy of note is New Jersey governor Chris Christie.

Even though my bride is a union employee at the local University Hospital, I agree with what Wisconsin's governor is proposing. The real problem up here is that the unions are of no benefit to productive workers, but tend to coddle the long-time inept workers (this is especially true among the public school teachers here). In addition, a lot of union money (pilfered from taxpayers) is going to promote the godless agenda of the godfather of the Democrat party, George Soros.

But in some cases, a public employee union would be a help. Specifically, local government in some Indiana communities. Both the employees and the taxpaying public would benefit by having unions fight for employment to be merit-based rather than a product of partisan politics. We've seen how patronage, cronyism and nepotism has caused serious problems with local government when completely unqualified people are hired to do the people's business.

A better alternative would be for the legislature to reform the "at will" status of employees in Indiana. Private sector employment is and should continue to be "at will" but public sector employment should not be. Plus, nepotism should be banned - as should patronage, with very limited exceptions for positions that are true political appointees.

Even growing up in heavily unionized steel country (Chesterton), we always teased people who were slacking that they'd either become a supervisor or joined a union. Unions had a place when workers were paid in worthless company scrip and literally couldn't leave. No more.

One of Gov. Scott Walker's proposals is for government jobs to be merit-based (the Teachers' Union in Wisconsin is strongly opposed to this). Another proposal is to allow state workers to opt out of union membership if they wish (again, the Public Employee Unions are strongly opposed here). They've got quite a gravy train going: fleece the taxpayer, and then have that money travel back and forth between powerful public employee unions and their leftwing lackeys in the political arena. These public employee union people are accountable to no one. If my union Dad and FDR could see the conflict of interest, why are so many people blind to it?
