83-20...

(Tim) I may live in Bloomington but I went to UW.

We miss you here in Wisconsin!!

Ah, so that explains why you write "24" when you see the number "20"

Oh. My. Go Badgers!

I may live in Bloomington, but I was born in Wisconsin. My wife, on the other hand, was born in Michigan and went to U of M. My brother-in-law and his wife went to IU. At least no one went to Ohio State. Things would get really ugly, then :)

You're right, Alex, it was 20 and I've corrected it.

Love,

Kevin,

I'll trust you won't Badger us about the score in small group on Sunday!

My sympathies to anyone who is a Hoosier football fan today. You almost beat Iowa last week and I'm sure you had hopes you'd do the same today.

Two native Badgers live in our house. Alex, my husband, grew up in Monroe, WI, in the center of southern WI, about 10 mi. from Illinois. Since my toddler-hood, my family lived between a sleepy farm town and Madison.

We are both Wisconsin alumns. Alex earned an M.A. and Ph.D from the University of Wisconsin, and I got a B.S. there.

The aroma of roses is getting stronger for the Badgers every day, but there's no telling how strong it will get.

P.S. Tim, if you don't mind my asking, what did you major in at the U. of Wisconsin. Also, did you wife go to college there, too? (Just wondered if the two of you met each other there.)

Ouch. Looking at the score, I was wondering what had happened to IU's hoops program since Bobby Knight left..... :^)

Reminds me of a game I went to in 1990 or so, when Michigan State plastered Northwestern something like 73-18. People were accusing MSU of running up the score until it was pointed out that it was the fourth string still scoring on them.

And yes, when you're a Spartan, or a Cubs fan (as I am), these things are few and far between....or more like it, it usually goes AGAINST my team. :^)

If 83-20 isn't running up the score, what would running up the score look like?

David, I'd suggest that it properly ought to mean that you're keeping the first or second string in and pulling lots of high yardage/trick plays when it's already clear that the opponent is outclassed on that day.

You can't tell by the score as much as you can by the play choices when the other team is clearly beaten. 21-13 (vs. 20-13) is "running up the score" when the winning team elects to go for two on what is obviously going to be the final play of the game, for example. The same goes for not taking a knee when you get the ball with 15 seconds left and the opponent has no time-outs.

Yes, but the UW coach insisted he wasn't running up the score. When charged with such after the game, he complained, "on the very next play, we were going to take a knee." But the guy scored; what can ya do, hey?

Unfortunately, the Wisconsin State Journal interviewed the offensive coach and the players and these quotes made it clear they were under orders to try and score as many points as possible.

But still, they were to the IU team as a high school team is to one of its feeder 8th grade teams.

As a dyed-in-the-wool Badger, I wondered about running up the score, too, and thought it wasn't a classy move. But when the Badgers scored with players with names/numbers we had to look up in the roster, my husband and I weren't so sure.

Not making excuses for Bielema if he told the offensive coordinator and players to score, score, score. They probably left Tolzien in too long, but you can make an argument to let James White play near the end of the game, since he was coming off an injury and missed the last 2 games. J.J. Watt, Gabe Carimi, and Lance Kendricks also left the field early, too, as well others on both sides of the ball. Both the 2nd & 3rd string QB's played, and as noted earlier so did a lot of players who usually rack up bench time during a game.

Thanks for the info from the Wisconsin State Journal, David W. Hopefully, it's still up. Hope Bielema wan't lying, but sometimes the truth hurts.

David, my take is that the 2nd and 3rd string are under no obligation to refuse to play the game to the best of their ability, which does mean "score score score."

I'm no friend to running up the score, and I do have to wonder how games would be different if the BCS standings didn't work on sheer spread of points without accounting for whether the 2nd/3rd string was in there. I just don't know that this is cut & dried.

Bike Bubba,

Thumbs up on your comment about how the BCS standings work.
