"Football was no longer my dream..."
by David and Tim Bayly on August 14, 2010 - 12:51pm
(Tim, w/thanks to David W.) At the beginning of his second season as an NFL running back for the 49ers, 23 year old Glen Coffee just announced his retirement:
It was a struggle for a long time. Actually when I look back I feel I never should have entered the draft in the first place. Football was no longer my dream. I found Christ in college. It changed my views on everything. But I still was a football player because it was expected of me, it was something I did all my life. I was basically wasting the (49ers') time.
Asked if he might change his mind, Coffee responded: "I've already told Christ it's time to go. I've already rung the bell. That's not going to happen."
Augustine would be smiling.

Beautiful.
JESUS ! Lord God please bless him and help him stand in the future when reasoning comes in like a friend and brings in the enemy of our faith (doubt). Please Lord fill him with your Spirit Amen . Join together and pray for this brother .
One wonders how the head coach is taking this not so subtle rebuke to the practice of Sunday ballgames....
Not sure why he's being applauded. Is it because of Sunday games? Would you rejoice if it was soccer?
With football being a more manly sport as compared to the slightly effeminate soccer is it a sport thing?
I can applaude him for following a different course that he percieves as the will of God but is someone who decides to play in the NFL making a poor choice
If he's got something else to do for God's glory, then yes, the NFL is a poor choice.
For that matter, given that the average NFL star dies at age 56 from the weight carried/drugs taken/overweight/whatever associated with the league, it is for purely worldly reasons probably not the best career choice, either. And for spiritual reasons, well, you've got the lust of the flesh amply encouraged in the league, too. It's a very real Sodom that I wouldn't send my kids into.
