Another man's truth...

(Tim) Our senior African correspondent, the Rev. David Wegener, yesterday sent this churlish response to my post concerning Butler's BB budget. Not wanting to silence different voices from lands of color, here 'tis:
"Before we all go crazy over Butler, that paragon of basketball purity, let's remember this. Butler earned a ton of money this year by going to the championship game in the tournament.
"What do we think they're going to do with that money? Send it to Mother Theresa's orphanages? Alleviate poverty in central Indiana? No. They're going to give their coach a raise and increase spending on their basketball program.
"They spent not because they won not."

Not to mention what happens to their enrollment next year...
Still, I'm sad they didn't knock off the devils.
Butler really has to give Stevens a raise, or they will lose him.
That said, Stevens said that he was going to be recruiting the same style of players he already had. May success not ruin him.
We'll see how well brother Wegener's characterization of Butler's program holds up as the money comes in. Personally, though I'm of course bitter and angry (ha ha) they beat my alma mater (MSU), I'm impressed by the relative lack of tatoos, the graduation rate, and the general scrappiness of their team. I'm also impressed by the fact that most of the roster was from Indiana.
Now I can't claim they're pure as the driven snow, of course, but inasmuch as any D1 team might aspire to what historically college games are supposed to be, Butler is there.
(BTW; not sport, not athletics; sport is hunting, fishing, and combat sports, athletics is track and field.....all else is "games")
And we'll see how Butler responds. Hopefully they don't become a games complex with a school attached as something of an afterthought.
