Psalms project continues: help us kickstart Psalms 11–20...

Last summer we asked you to help us with the My Soul Among Lions Psalms 1–10 Kickstarter. Many of you did so and God used your generosity to bring about the production and distribution of seventeen new versions of the first ten Psalms. God has blessed this work as these songs have become part of the household music of many individuals, families, and churches both near and far.

Now we’re ready to roll tape on the second volume, Psalms 11–20. Yup! We need your help this time, also.

Would you please watch and share this Psalm 11-20 Kickstarter video and do whatever you can to help us with this work? And if you can't help with the Kickstarter campaign, we ask you to pre-order the album because even that will be a help and encouragement to us. Thanks. To God be the glory!

We're also pleased and excited to announce that My Soul Among Lions will be on tour this week in South Carolina and Tennessee...

Prayers of confession: Samuel Johnson, William Law, and Jeremy Taylor...

Yesterday's post of an excerpt from Boswell's Life of Johnson led to a discussion of the origin of the one and two-line excerpts of prayers bringing the post to an end. Were they written by Johnson or taken from some prayer book of the time?

The lines are all Johnson's, and from the quote marks it's clear each line or so is a different excerpt from this or that prayer. Speaking of prayer, here's a discussion of confession of sin...

Reformed Worship (VI): a word to our Anglican brothers...

(NOTE: This is the sixth post in a series on Reformed worship.

Hypocrisy...

Hypocrisy ...is the way Satan attacks the Church of God, when he can get nowhere with open war.

- Calvin on Acts 5:1-11

Hypocrites do not care for Christ. Drunk with their own righteousness, they are not hungry and thirsty for His grace. Those who are devoted to the world, think nothing of the heavenly life.

- Calvin on Matthew 11:28

We are often taught, that the seeming goodness and piety of hypocrites is not of a lasting and persevering nature. It is so with respect to their practice of the duty of prayer in particular, and especially of secret prayer.

They can omit this duty, and their omission of it not be taken notice of by others, who know what profession they have made. So that a regard to their own reputation doth not oblige them still to practice it...

If I could have a beer with Jesus...

A dear bro sent this link wondering if it's blasphemous? Not at all. He should read my Dad's Christmas story, "How Silently, How Silently," about Jesus coming to Wheaton. Jesus drank wine with his twelve buddies.

Christ the Word dedicates new church-house...

CTW children on platformLast night I was able to attend the dedication of the new church-house of Christ the Word, and what a privilege it was!

After walking around the building singing, the children entered the sanctuary and went up onto the platform holding Bibles aloft as we sang praises to the Lord. After a minute of chaos as all the kids went down to find their parents, the service continued with a sermon by Pastor Dave (Max) Curell. Two men from outside the church were honored for their work: Mike Vrlenich who directed Christ the Word's capital campaign before moving to Naperville two years ago; and Mike Boles who served Christ the Word pro bono as general contractor. Christ the Word elder, Ben James Sr., led us in the prayer of dedication.

May God bless Christ the Word precisely as Ben James asked here in his prayer:

Not in clerverniss of speech...

For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void. - 1 Corinthians 1:17

Formal recitation is to liturgy as reading manuscripts is to preaching. Both are helpful, particularly for beginning pastors. Charles Simeon read his manuscripts for the first five years or so. But at some point, a preacher should preach in a way that allows him to speak to his flock and specific sheep on the fly. And this is to depend upon the Holy Spirit to illumine the needs of the day rather than simply the needs of the race or of believers or of his flock annually or monthly.

The pastor who pastors knows how often family members he's heard about in counseling will show up unannounced on a Sunday morning and place themselves under the preaching of the Word. Shall he simply read the sermon he prepared with no thought of them? Is that pastoral? The pastor who pastors knows how often he will see the eyes and posture and faces of the souls in his flock and know...

Order of worship for Good Friday (2012)...

Here's the liturgy for our Clearnote Church, Bloomington's Good Friday service this past week. We publish it here for the use of any who may find it helpful. The choir offering above occurs midway through the service. (TB, w/thanks to at least Jody and Phil)

Please pray for South Sudan...

There are many reasons to pray for the brand new country of South Sudan, and here's another. A friend who works as a missionary there writes...

Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength...

Psalm 29 awakens the slothful and sentimental postmodern soul. Have you read it recently?

Please pray for Dr. Hsu...

Please pray for the godly elder and humble pianist, Dr. Samuel Hsu, who has been in an accident and has sustained severe brain trauma. Dr. Hsu has been a father to many and the loss of his faithful counsel and love both at Tenth Pres. and Philadelphia College of the Bible would be a difficult blow. Bob Kaplowitz...

Bob_and_lucas Our dear brother, Bob Kaplowitz, had a bad spell early this evening, but now seems to have stabilized again. If you're wondering who Bob is, here's a post from 2008 that should make it clear to you that the entire congregation of ClearNote Church, Bloomington, is praying for Bob's recovery. The work he does among us is eternally important. Please pray for him, would you? And for what it's worth, the man draped over Bob's shoulders is our son-in-law, Lucas Weeks (Hannah's husband).

Classic rock and manly zeal....

"...it's indie or classic rock that moves our spirit."

(Tim) You all know ClearNote Church is filled with classical musicians but we worship mostly under the leadership of amplified instruments. This EP just released by our worship musicians gives you a good feel for how we're led. What distinguishes our worship leaders is that they use instrumentation and tunes and rhythms that are familiar to those who attend. We're not asked to go back into genres of previous centuries when we sing God's praises and pray.

Then too, we believe our music should be characterized by masculine zeal. The congregation should have men pushing us to express our joy and firm commitment and worship for the majesty and glory of God. Faint spirits and cold hearts are challenged when singing God's praises, here.

So you'll notice how well-matched the music and instrumentation and beat are to our goal. If you were to worship with us one Lord's Day morning, you'd notice this is how we pray and preach, also--we don't give people space for unbelief and ambivalence...

Afghan regime tortures Christians...

(Tim, w/thanks to Aaron and Mick) The betrayal, imprisonment, and torture of brothers in Christ by regimes propped up by American forces is a stench that rises to Heaven. Read this letter and updates telling the story of our brother, Said Musa, imprisoned by the Afghan government propped up by our U.S. military forces. Then pray.

The obedience of faith...

(Tim, w/thanks to Sharon Dykstra) Wonderful account of the power of prayer when faith is smaller than a mustard seed. Today, God may direct you to speak to someone, to do something, or to pray in a particular way for a particular person. If so, trust God and speak or act or pray in such a way as to fall on your face if He doesn't add His power to your mustard seed of faith.

I pray for those "who are conflicted in their desires...and would like to determine themselves differently..."

(Tim) Pastor Sam Andreades, a longtime member of Redeemer Presbyterian Church, now serves New York's Village Church affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in America. Recently, Pastor Andreades did a five minute spot on WFMU's Seven Second Delay radio show concerning Village Church's willingness to help those "who are conflicted in their desires and their identity and would like to determine themselves differently." (Here's a pic from the occasion.)

Near the end, Pastor Andreades was asked if he wanted to lead in prayer? The interview begins around 18:30 and the concluding prayer at 23:30. Here's Pastor Andreades' prayer:

HOST: Sam, would you like to lead a prayer?

SAM ANDREADES: Uh, I'd be willing to pray if nobody laughs; if we can do it reverently.

HOST: Sure, let's give it a try and see what happens, OK? Ready?

Casting our cares on Him...

(Tim, w/thanks to Jeff) Note that we can trust God with our complaints. Or rather, we must trust God with our complaints.

Righteous are You, O LORD, that I would plead my case with You; Indeed I would discuss (complain-ESV) matters of justice with You: Why has the way of the wicked prospered? Why are all those who deal in treachery at ease? You have planted them, they have also taken root; They grow, they have even produced fruit. You are near to their lips But far from their mind. But You know me, O LORD; You see me; And You examine my heart’s attitude toward You. Drag them off like sheep for the slaughter And set them apart for a day of carnage! How long is the land to mourn And the vegetation of the countryside to wither? For the wickedness of those who dwell in it, Animals and birds have been snatched away, Because men have said, “He will not see our latter ending.” (Jeremiah 12:1-4)
