From Jonathan Edwards: resolutions for the new year...

By the grace of God, we now move into 2017 and here's a copy of Jonathan Edwards' resolutions to help us pursue the holiness without which no man will see God. This particular list I typed and printed for my congregation some years ago—before Baylyblog. Now I can publish it here.

Edwards adopted these resolutions at various times prior to his twentieth birthday. Numbers one through thirty-four were all made prior to December 18, 1722, when Edwards was nineteen years of age. Numbers one through twenty-one were written at one sitting and numbers twenty-two through thirty-two at another.

Notice at the outset that Edwards recognizes...

The Christian Mind Conference in Spartanburg, SC...

This announcement from Trinity Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Spartanburg:

Evangelicalism has been gutted. The core has has been scooped out and little more than a thin shell remains. Churches are clubs, sermons are stand up, and the sheep are fed with the sawdust of entertainment. No wonder most Christians can’t define or defend basic doctrines of Scripture. Like the rest of the West, the church is amusing herself to death.

The Reformed answer usually comes in the form of a toothless scholasticism. We find a way to do nothing that requires faith. Instead, we rest complacently within the technical confines of our confessions. In other words, we snore to Bach rather than Lady Gaga.

This isn’t the faith of Calvin, Ryle, and Hodge. These men demonstrated that a mind possessed by the glories of biblical doctrines leads to a life of faith and holiness. Harry Blamires says, “The Christian mind is the prerequisite of Christian thinking, and Christian thinking is the prerequisite for Christian action.”

In just a few weeks, Dr. David Talcott, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at The King's College, will tackle how the church got here and what we can do to return to a Biblical way of thinking. We'd like to invite you to attend The Christian Mind conference at Trinity Presbytery Church in Spartanburg, SC on August 19 & 20. Then, in a Friday night concert, My Soul Among Lions will demonstrate the power the Psalms possess to shape the Christian mind. Both the conference and the concert are free.

Here's a rundown of the sessions, followed by a link for more information and registration...

In film exposures of Planned Parenthood, do ends justify means?

Pastor Doug Wilson recently did a helpful post exploring the ethics of tactical deception on the part of the Center for Medical Progress (CMP). He got me thinking about what constitutes a moral obligation of full disclosure and whether parameters for godly deception can be marked out.

I have had discussions with Christians who are very pleased by CMP’s work, but are conflicted regarding tactical deception. They wonder if they’re giving into saying “the ends justify the means.” In addition to this, there are R2K proponents criticizing CMP for their “unethical” methods for infiltrating PP. The former are understandably conflicted, the latter are selectively squeamish—dare I say pietistic—about operating within the “common” kingdom.

Adding to the mess is the media’s selectivity in reporting on CMP's videos while also reporting names linked to a website dedicated to facilitating adulterous liaisons...

Because I'm a comedy writer...

I realized some time back that the comedians we love and watch are perfectly described in Scripture as "scoffers" and "mockers". I was browsing the internet this evening when the point really hit me in the gut in a passage from the Wikipedia entry on Seth MacFarlane. For those who don't know, Mr. MacFarlane is an "actor, animator, comedian, writer, producer, director, and singer," and he's responsible for shows such as Family Guy and American Dad. Here's what Wikipedia had to say about his September 11, 2001 brush with death:

Affirming stuff, part one...

Christian faith has always unapologetically been affirming of “stuff” - physical stuff. So affirming of stuff, in fact, that the entire world is scandalized by it. Some might say that one problem with our godless generation is its denigration of stuff; like a child in formation within his mother’s womb. The reason such a child may be incautiously discarded (killed) is that it is said to be nothing more than a mess of tissue - you know, it’s “just” stuff.

The word 'gnostic' is so abused of late that it can refer to nearly anything—so nebulous, it defies concreteness. This is a sad irony. But the fact remains, Christians have always scandalized the world by our unapologetic affirmation of stuff—insofar as our spirituality is divorced from stuff, some form of dualistic juju is wreaking havoc on our very humanity. It is a violent form of dualism which rages against our identity—an identity created by God which is identifiable through our bodies...

Making suits from Adamantium...

A common refrain lobbed from R2K adherents is a "lack of consistency" on the part of those holding to the historic Two Kingdoms doctrine. If you think God has called you to call sodomites and baby-killers to repentance, why not call on civil government to enforce the worship of the Trinity and punish Sabbath breakers?

At the heart of this complaint is R2Ker's notion of the "spirituality" of the church. What is the spirituality of the church?

Good question. On its face, the term lends itself to being so vague as to be nearly useless. Calvin and others following him use this term much different than R2K men. Hisorically, it wasn't a paradigm.

But R2K has co-opted the term and R2K men are all over the board as to its meaning...

Where the Old Testament connects to you...

Our Pathway is studying 1 Peter. In going through it, the goal is to apply the Scriptures to our lives. I'm convinced one of our greatest obstacles to application is our use of reason. Being divided ourselves, we create divisions known as "categories". If you've ever been in a home where there are clearly defined standards for cleanliness, you know any casual, uncalculated move is a cookie crumb's length away from anarchy. It isn't that the host (usually hostess) is morally opposed to cookies, it's just that crumbs on the carpet do not compute. That's not where they go, so when they end up there...an unbroken gaze fixates upon them. It isn't that she doesn't want to have a good time...it's just...cookies...crumbs...carpet. Why? Can't you see what you're doing? There's no reconciling crumbs on the carpet. That's not the point. Validating your notions of what are nice, clean, philosophically coherent categories isn't on God's agenda.

The ministry of the Old Testament prophets was a steady series of morsel-like crumbs being dropped leading somewhere. Their ministry can still be tasted today as that is exactly what God intended. The Old Testament is not a conundrum, or a problem in need of reconciliation with the New Testament. If you're a good Calvinist, you know that because you've got some pretty good categories for reconciling them in your head. The problem is we're still not tasting the morsels. We accept the continuity of the Old and New Testaments but we miss the feast because we've rejected dispensational categories and opted for "covenantal" ones. We miss that the continuity consists of...
